Universal Orlando is in the middle of hosting their annual Mardi Gras event which takes place this year from February 5- April 24. This past Sunday was my first time partaking in this event and I have to say, I left Universal very impressed. The Mardi Gras festivities do not cost anything extra aside from your regular park ticket or annual pass. For locals with annual passes, this is a fantastic “free” event and the concert lineup alone could be worth the price of your pass.

What is Mardi Gras at Universal?
Each year, Universal Orlando celebrates the sights, sounds, and flavors of Mardi Gras here in Orlando. The event involves a nightly parade which you can spectate or even sign up to ride on a float and throw beads. You’ll also find street entertainers like stilts walkers and more. Food booths throughout Universal Studios offer up New Orleans-inspired flavors to celebrate the occasion. Other hotels and restaurants across Universal property get in on the fun by offering specialty dishes to honor the occasion. However, arguably the best part of this event is the concert lineup.

Universal has some great names lined up for a concert that doesn’t cost a dime extra to attend. In addition to this, anyone can show up early enough to obtain a great viewing spot. I may be biased here because Styx played on Sunday night and they are my favorite band. I’ve seen them a number of other times, but those concerts always cost me a few hundred dollars each. This past Sunday, we arrived at Universal in the afternoon, rode some rides, ate some good food, and settled into the concert area an hour before it started for what turned out to be an amazing (and free) show. What’s in store next month? You can find the March lineup on their website.

Opportunities like this are one of the many advantages of living in the Central Florida area. I can’t wait to experience more of this festival throughout the rest of its season.
